J.R.R. Tolkien: Six Decades of Criticism annotates over 1,600 reviews, articles, essays, books, and other commentary on the creator of Middle Earth. Author Judith A. Johnson also provides a bibliography of Tolkien novels, poems, interviews, and other published works; essays describing Tolkien's writings and summarizing the critical response to them; and an appendix listing Tolkien-related organizations, societies, and publications. American Libraries
This bibliography of works by and about one of the foremost fantasy writers of the twentieth century contains notes on hundreds of reviews, articles, essays, theses, dissertations, and books. The book's organization is chronological, each chapter devoted to a particular era and time frame in the Tolkien history. Each chapter contains a brief introductory essay that describes works by Tolkien published within a particular time frame and summarizes the patterns or trends of critical response during the period covered. Following this is an alphabetical by title listing of works by Tolkien and a chronologically organized bibliography of Tolkien criticism. The final chapter offers a preview of the response of future critics to the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. The appendix offers a list of all Tolkien related organizations, societies, and publications. The indexes provide access to the Tolkien criticism by the name of the critic and by individual works.

The work of J.R.R. Tolkien continues to attract scholarly attention, and this bibliography is a welcome addition to the literature on this complex author. Johnson presents her material in four sections that delineate the flow of Tolkien scholarship from the earliest works and The Hobbit, through Lord of the Rings, the subsequent controversy, and finally the posthumous publications and the ongoing critical response. She provides introductory essays summarizing the chief trends of each period, an alphabetical list of Tolkien's works in that period, and a chronological list of criticism published in the same period. All of Tolkien's writings, scholarly, poetic, and literary, are included; critical coverage extends from 1922 to 1984. Indexes by critic and by title of work criticized are included. Because much of the material comes from a number of ephemeral publications, it is especially useful to have a list of libraries holding the more obscure journals that Johnson cites. Her annotations are precise and thorough, but this wealth of detail makes one long for a subject index to track down criticism in specific areas, such as source works, comparative mythology, women's roles, or Jungian concepts. Johnson's bibliography updates West's Tolkien Criticism: An Annotated Checklist (rev. ed., CH, Mar '82) by four years. Her annotations are more useful for researchers, being descriptive where West tends to critique the criticism. Libraries with West will want Johnson as well; those choosing one or the other will be better served by Johnson. Recommended for libraries serving scholars, students, and fans of Tolkien.-M.R.
