摘要
摘要
The author explores the net effect - not just how it evolved and what it does, but how it relates to the way we live. Most writing about the Net focuses on a particular aspect: its use for business or its driving technology, for example. This book aims at a broader target.

Porter offers a gentle introduction to the fascinating world of the World Wide Web. From the precomputer age of mechanical devices to the modern day Internet, she traces the development of the tools of modern communications using a totally nontechnical and somewhat anecdotal approach. Although the evolution of the Web is in itself a marvel, this wonder cannot be compared to the extensive effect of the Internet on every walk of life. The author has skillfully told the story of the Web from its infancy to its present stage, from an experiential perspective. The impact of the Web is examined and detailed from all perspectives through events and quotes from the past decades, highlighting the important milestones along the way. By drawing parallels to lessons in history, the technological advances and its cultural effects are presented in nontechnical and enticing terms, so that even an apprehensive reader will find the discussion enlightening and beneficial. An excellent information source for those bewildered or hesitant about the technological advances of the Web. General readers; lower-division undergraduates; two-year technical program students. J. Y. Cheung University of Oklahoma
