《學校圖書館期刊》(School Library Journal)評論
Gr 5-9-- This book has such an appealing jacket that readers are likely to pick it up immediately. Unfortunately, the text is not as meritorious, as it focuses on the least interesting aspects of Tolkien's life. The first six chapters deal with his early life. Readers are given a detailed account of the family's many moves, his schoolwork, and other minutia that are neither interesting nor useful. The result is a narrative that is often plodding and mundane. Compounding these problems are the incredibly dull black-and-white photographs and drawings. A picture of Tolkien does not appear until half way through the book, accompanied by the words, ``later in life.'' Most of the photographs are of schools he attended or views of cities in which he lived. The low point is the inclusion of the floor plan of one of the schools. However, the book is aimed at younger Tolkein fans, and they may find the final three chapters and epilogue, which deal directly with the man as writer and storyteller, the best part. Other biographies, such as Carpenter's Tolkien (Houghton, 1977; o.p.), are beyond the scope of many young readers. --Marilyn Makowski, Greenwood High School, SC (c) Copyright 2010. Kirkus 評論
Since there doesn't seem to be another biography of Tolkien for young readers, this pedestrian venture will probably be useful. Collins presents the life in orderly fashion, dwelling at length on the Oxford philologist's childhood (he was orphaned early), then focusing on the writing and publication of his fantasy, almost to the exclusion of his academic career; his groundbreaking work and the high esteem in which it is still held are not even mentioned. Despite a chapter entitled ``A Spark Ignites,'' the fascination for language and mythology that was the source of the beloved stories isn't really conveyed here. There are b&w photos (the man, his homes, his haunts; period shots, including some from WW I), plus a great many truly dreadful drawings that seem to be intended to represent Middle Earth--a few pained-looking hobbits and a plethora of clumsily drawn orcs and goblins. Chronology; glossary; bibliography; index. (Biography. 10-14)

Gr. 6-9. Readers who have enjoyed The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings may be curious about the man who wrote them. Collins provides fascinating information about Tolkien's early years, his rocky romance with Edith Bratt, his experiences during World War I, his years at Oxford as student and professor, and how he developed the stories and poems that would become The Hobbit and his famous trilogy. The biography is heavily illustrated with pencil drawings and with black-and-white photographs, but while there are many photos of Tolkien in his later years and several of his homes, of C. S. Lewis, and even of pubs Tolkien frequented, there are none of his wife or four children. William Heagy's drawings capture scenes from Tolkien's works, but since the pictures are not captioned, readers must be familiar with the stories to fully appreciate them. A chronology, a glossary of Middle-earth terms, a bibliography, and a list of Tolkien's works are appended. ~--Chris Sherman
