PreS-Gr 2-Charming watercolor, gouache, and collage artwork illustrates this traditional carol. Set in a fanciful, medieval English countryside, each spread features a verse of the song opposite a picture of an animal performing a farming chore. For example, "a pig went out to dig," "a cow went out to plow," etc. The individual verses conclude with two energetic, joyous double-page spreads showing all of the animals gathering for the Christmas feast, and then celebrating throughout the countryside. "Let every creature on Earth now sing,/On Christmas Day,/On Christmas Day./Let every creature on Earth now sing/On Christmas Day in the morning!" The score is appended, followed by a two-page history of the Christmas symbols shown in the artwork-mistletoe, oak, holly, laurel, Christmas rose, pomegranate, and wheat. Perfect for holiday storytimes and individual sharing, this is an enchanting picture book.-L.F. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Young readers will likely romp around the Christmas tree singing out the words to this jaunty English folk song cum holiday carol, but when they're ready to take a breather, they'll find a bounty of things to peruse in Sweet's (Love and Kisses) cheery artwork, among her best to date. Using a combination of watercolor, gouache and collage, the artist depicts "a pig went out to dig," "a crow went out to sow" and a menagerie of other animal farmers who contribute to a grand Christmas feast. Each spread is framed with a festive, gilded border and features a diminutive illustration of a different plant, the history and symbolism of which Sweet identifies in endnotes. Jolly and inventive. Silly rhymes, cheerful pictures of animal farmers, and a culminating feast make this a child-appealing rendition of an old carol. The text appears on rather formal left-hand pages with a few collage elements; full-page bucolic scenes in watercolor grace the right-hand pages; the whole is brought together with a celebratory gold border. A musical score, a map of the animals' farms, and a foreword by that master of song, John Langstaff, are included. From HORN BOOK Spring 2000, (c) Copyright 2010. Ages 4^-7. Langstaff offers a little-known English folk song and suggests, in this picture book's foreword, that children might enjoy acting it out, imitating the animals mentioned in the verses. These include the pig who went out to dig, the cow who went out to plow, and the sparrow who went out to harrow, each on Christmas Day. The song ends with the sentiment, "Let every creature on Earth now sing / On Christmas Day in the morning." Dressed in medieval garb, the animals appear in pictures resembling illustrations from a book of hours, showing scenes of farm life in an idyllic setting: peaceful, purposeful, and sunlit within gilt borders. Simple and pleasing in composition and color, the watercolor artwork brings the song to life. Piano music and illustrator notes (on plant symbolism related to Christmas) are appended. Carolyn Phelan
