Gr 7 Up-A comprehensive compendium of diet and nutrition. There are no bells or whistles in this volume, which is a compilation of articles on all facets of nutrition, drawn mainly from FDA documents. The information is presented in a straightforward, plainspoken manner. Chapters of specialized appeal include "Special Dietary Guidelines for Teenage Mothers" and "Assessing School Lunches," as well as coverage of teen snacking. No illustrations are included, but most chapters feature a "Weird Words" vocabulary box, and "It's a Fact!" and "Quick Tip" highlight main points from the text or provide sidebar information. This title will be useful to those working on reports on a variety of topics, as well as to general readers concerned about their dietary health.-Joyce Adams Burner, Hillcrest Library, Prairie Village, KS (c) Copyright 2010. This book, part of the Teen Health Series, provides easy to understand information for teens interested in making good food choices, following nutrition guidelines, and coping with special dietary needs. This book provides basic nutrition information for today's teens. According to the editors, the book deals comprehensively with diet information according to the needs and interests of people in middle school and high school. Today's teens need evidence-based information that they can access and use to make informed decisions regarding their dietary choices. According to the editors, this book is written specifically for teens in middle school and high school. The editors and members of the advisory board who developed this book are librarians from public, academic, and medical libraries. None of the library professionals have documented nutrition expertise. However, the basic nature of the book leads one to suspect that they have the expertise to pull together nutrition sources used in the development of this book. The book is divided into six main parts, arranged around broad areas of interest to teens, including food fundamentals, dietary choices, meal planning, weight control, eating disorders, and more information. The book includes documents and excerpts from pulications issued by government agencies interested in the nutritional needs of adolescents. Of special interest is a chapter devoted to cookbooks for the teen interested in learning to cook healthy foods. This book is written in an easy to understand format describing issues that many teens face every day, and then provides thoughtful explanations so that teens can make informed decisions. Thiis is an interesting book that provides important facts and information for today's teens. Neva L Crogan, PhD, APRN, BC(University of Arizona College of Nursing). Copyright 2001, Doody Publishing

This collection of articles originally published elsewhere is part of the "Teen Health Series" within Omnigraphics' Health Reference Series. Each chapter derives from a government agency document, private foundation publication, health-related periodical, or from the Internet. The articles are organized into six areas: basic nutrition, food selection recommendations, meal planning, weight control, eating disorders, and references. The information is commonly accepted mainstream nutritional knowledge and opinion about topics that appeal to teens. The book could serve as a resource for students who are writing papers about nutrition-related topics. Probably few teens care about the differences between polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, or HDL, LDL, and VLDL--all cholesterols. Many of the articles were written for an adult audience, but having "teen" in the title probably means college-level students are unlikely to use the book. Spaced throughout are shadowed areas in various geometric shapes highlighting tips, facts, "weird words," and reiterated text titled "Remember!!" These may help keep an adolescent's eyes moving. Some facts, such as the percentage of teens who are overweight, vary from chapter to chapter, and there is also predictable repetition of definitions and concepts.
