K-Gr 2-- Learning the correct sequence of the letters is usually considered a necessary part of memorizing the alphabet, but here readers have an ABC that begins with the iguanas who come in their pajamas, ends with a cow that is mooing anyhow, and has 24 other critters sandwiched in-between, in no particular order. Colorful endpapers do provide the standard lineup from A to Z. Alphabetical jingles and jump-rope-type rhymes describe the antics of the bumptious and rowdy birds, beasts, and insects that descend upon a little girl's breakfast table in the interval between Mom's appearance in bathrobe and slippers and her reappearance a few minutes later as a smartly dressed professional woman. Young listeners and readers alike will enjoy following the amazing activities from page to page, the surprising comings and goings through the open window, and the unpredictable events taking place within the pictures on the walls. Bright, bold, busy, and innovative. --Joan McGrath, Education Centre Library, Toronto, Ontario, Canada (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Billing itself somewhat coyly as a ``scrambled alphabet book to be read at breakfast,'' this ABC book is not so easy to figure out. In each spread--the same scene throughout--a girl is eating breakfast and an animal enters, accompanied by a verse (``the Dragonfly, the dragonfly / sprinkles salt as she flies by''; ``the Monkey, the monkey / dabs my egg with chutney''). The initial letters are in random order, but the real difficulty here lies in figuring out which animal is which, as the room fills up with a chaotic assortment of animals engaged in various rhyming activities. There is much to look at, though, and Zimmer's ( The Sky is Full of Song ; In a Dark, Dark Room & Other Scary Stories ) cartoony illustrations are full of vitality. Ages 4-9. (Mar.) Strange animals, described in rhyming couplets, accumulate on succeeding spreads to the wonderment of a little girl at breakfast. In an unusual approach to teaching the alphabet, the animals are introduced in random order. Likely to confuse even those who know the alphabet. From HORN BOOK 1991, (c) Copyright 2010. Lively creatures, drawn with mischievous good humor, invade a room where a child breakfasts and draws in her notebook. The gimmick here is that the letters are not in alphabetical order; as the animals are identified, sometimes pages after they appear, block capitals are put in place in a page-encircling alphabet that is finally completed with the cow. An entertaining exercise in letter recognition and ordering, enlivened by Zimmer's zany illustrations and by the realistic story that frames the fantasy. Ages 4-7. Endpapers, back and front, display the oddly assorted cast of this lively alphabet drama about a little girl whose breakfast is interrupted by the arrival of a slew of weird-looking, uninvited animal guests. Hopping through the window, popping out of a trunk, or leaping from a picture on the wall, the animals grow in number, posing, creating havoc, and surprising each other and the little girl, who seems to love the wacky goings-on. The initial letters of animal names, which are relayed through simple, catchy verse, decorate page margins after each animal appears. Zimmer's illustrations are clever and startling, not cute (some of his bug-eyed beasts are downright ugly), and the pages are very busy--children who look closely will find more mischief afoot in the pictures on the walls. But the out-of-order alphabet (it begins with I for iguana and ends with C for cow) will challenge and surprise children, especially those whose experience with the alphabet is linked to the familiar ABC rhyme. ~--Stephanie Zvirin
