This text serves as a reference book for pediatric health professionals who provide comprehensive primary care to children with special healthcare needs. Part I is a focus on the major issues common to providing care to children with special needs. Part II is a focus on the primary healthcare needs for 27 chronic conditions. The purpose is to provide pediatric healthcare professionals with the knowledge necessary to provide comprehensive primary care to children with special healthcare needs. With this book, the editors excel at meeting this objective. Nurse practitioners and physicians responsible for providing primary healthcare to children with chronic conditions are targeted. The editors certainly have the academic preparation and experience to author this text, and have utilized many credible professionals as contributors. This is a comprehensive discussion of primary healthcare content for children with chronic conditions. Chapters are formatted in a similar fashion and incl ude content relative to basic diagnosis and treatment of the specific condition. The major strength is the specific focus in each chapter on the primary care management of the child with the chronic condition, including healthcare maintenance, common illness management, developmental issues, and special family concerns. Two new chapters have been included: Transition to Adulthood, and Autism. Each chapter now includes additional resources and current references. The index is alphabetized and helpful, and there are numerous helpful black-and-white illustrations. Although reasons are given for the exclusion of mental health conditions, it would have been beneficial to include the most common disorders. This text is definitely a worthwhile contribution to the field. The new edition is justified by the inclusion of two more chapters, placing of the resource lists in the relevant chapter, and current reference lists.
