The human voice an incredibly beautiful and expressive instrument, and when multiple voices are unified in tone and purpose a powerful statement is realized. No wonder people have always wanted to sing in a communal context-a desire apparently stemming from a deeply rooted human instinct. Consequently, choral performance has often been related historically to human rituals and ceremonies, especially rites of a religious nature.
This Historical Dictionary of Choral Music examines choral music and practice in the Western world from the Medieval era to the 21st century, focusing mostly on familiar figures like Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and Britten. But its scope is considerably broader, and it includes all sorts of music-religious, secular, and popular-from sources throughout the world. It contains a chronology, an introduction, a bibliography, and more than 1,000 cross-referenced dictionary entries on important composers, genres, conductors, institutions, styles, and technical terms of choral music.

The rich history of choral music, primarily in the Western world, is the subject of this new volume by Unger, professor of music at Baldwin-Wallace College. He has compiled entries for composers and their choral works, choral genres, and technical terms as well as prominent conductors and organizations known for their contribution to choral music. The chronology preceding the main text provides a glimpse at key historical choral events, beginning with the standardization of Roman Catholic plainsong during the reign of Pope Gregory the Great (AD 590-604) and continuing with other choral milestones, premieres, etc., through 2003. Biographical entries vary in length from short paragraphs to several pages and include cross-references to teachers, influences, styles, and so forth. Unger's approach is to focus on each composer or artist as associated with choral music. Sergey Prokofiev, for example, is known primarily for orchestral and stage works, and readers must wade through a typical reference entry about him for information about his choral output. Unger filters out many non-choral-related facts, making this a handy guide for choral devotees and researchers. In addition to the glossary and the entries, the volume contains a succinct introduction on terminology and the history of choral music and an extensive bibliography. There are few choral reference works available. The Choral Singer's Companion (rev. ed., 2000) is a practical guide for singers, offering advice on singing, conducting, rehearsing, and more, with minimal historical or biographical information. Who Is Who in Choral Music (2007) offers biographies as well as contact information for managers and choral organizations, but only living artists in the choral music field are included. Unger (emer., SUNY, Fredonia) has provided choral directors and musicologists with an expanded second edition of his Historical Dictionary of Choral Music (CH, Dec'10, 48-1810), first published more than a decade ago. Included are more than three-hundred additional entries for composers, choral directors, choral groups, and terms. New entries are not confined to contemporary personalities and ensembles; biographical commentaries dealing with less-known composers of the Renaissance, baroque, and classic periods who made important contributions to the choral repertoire are also included. As is the case with the first edition, composers whose choral works do not play a significant role in the international repertoire are omitted. Unger gives much attention to the bibliography, which is almost twice as long as that of the first edition. Most entries are for English-language sources, but there are also a few listings of important sources in German and other languages. Since this republication is an expanded rather than a revised edition, those who own the earlier edition should replace it with this one. A valuable resource for well-developed choral programs. This second edition of Unger's (director emeritus, Sch. of Music, SUNY Fredonia) book is an excellent guide to choral music. The first edition was published in 2010, and it covered composers of choral music and their major works (two thirds of the entries), conductors, genres, styles, technical terms, and institutions. This extraordinary new edition adds 300 entries to the original 1,000 and updates many existing ones. Alphabetically arranged, the listings are generally a paragraph or two, except for longer entries on composers such as Bach, Handel, Haydn, among other key musical artists. Unger includes a basic chronology and an exceptional bibliography that's divided into sections ranging from general reference works and general studies of choral music to guides of repertoire, examinations of traditions, activities by region, and studies of individual composers and conductors. VERDICT A remarkable resource that will please both musical professionals and amateurs, along with teachers and their students, and conductors and singers.--Marcia Welsh
