Here's how: shelve your illusions, forget your qualms, and fight. Applebaum and Evans, veterans of the late, partly reader-written Harper's Weekly, maintain that anyone who doesn't try to write fancy can write adequately and, properly armed, penetrate the market; to prevail--and this we can endorse--requires additional skills and no compunctions. If you haven't had an experience worth airing, they advise, set one up. To attract an editor's attention and make yours a solicited ms., find out what he/she likes. (Who edited that book? you call to ask.) At contract time, get an agent or a lawyer. (Agents can't afford to take on any but the exceptional untried.) Once you're on a publisher's list, aim for class A--not B or C--treatment. Use your contacts. Toot your horn. Milk your assets. Squawk. Agitate. Or, by-pass the established, congested channels and publish yourself. Today, that's a practical option, especially for the many how-to manuals and local-or special-interest items that proficient amateurs turn out. The authors show them the ropes and the snares, from copy-editing to production to publicity. Those going the traditional route are provided with a thoughtful, unhackneyed submission proposal (for a real, forthcoming work) that alone might be worth the price of the book. With the appended list of resources, it's the No. 1 strategic guide to today's volatile market. We've already recommended it to our favorite unpublished author.
