摘要
We like a bowl full of warm milk, before curling up for our naps.Bananas, bowls of milk, acorns, and clover are just some of the tasty treats that make appearances in this smorgasbord of snacks and snackers. Iris Hiskey Arno's delectable verse and John Sandford's beautiful and often humorous watercolors lead children through a wild world of munching and back home again to soothe the rumble in their own hungry tummies.

A simple, first-person verse catalogs familiar animals and their favorite snacks: the cow says I like a mouthful of clover, and the undiscriminating goat exclaims I'll eat whatever's around! The soft watercolor and pencil illustrations combine realism and charm but suffer from what appears to be poor reproduction. Nonetheless, this is an appealing and age-appropriate choice for young snackers. From HORN BOOK Spring 2000, (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. This Growing Tree entry features a series of animals, one to a page, nibbling on appropriate tidbits: ""I like a snack on an iceberg,"" says a polar bear with a fish in its mouth, opposite a woodpecker who says, ""I like a snack in a tree."" Chickens, cows, pigs, kittens, elephants, and frogs have their say, as does the puppy that steals a sandwich off a checkered tablecloth. The last word is a girl's, whose rich brown tresses and glowing dark eyes contrast nicely with the big red apple in her hand. The meticulously detailed illustrations, with their stippled lines depicting every feather and blade of grass, are attractive if static. The text, however, is bouncy enough for repeated read-alouds. Ages 2^-4. Preschoolers are introduced to a variety of animals enjoying their favorite snacks in this appealing picture book appropriate for the very young. Children paging through the book on their own will immediately recognize and follow the theme, thanks to Sandford's highly detailed illustrations depicting a mother hen and her chick pecking corn in the barnyard, kittens lapping a bowl full of warm milk, and a polar bear poised on an iceberg with the catch of the day in its mouth. Arno's gentle rhyming text changes its focus, sometimes emphasizing habitat, sometimes behavior, and at other times introducing good descriptive words, such as crunchy and chewy. The story's ending, which shows a young girl reaching for an apple, will tempt kids to talk about their own snack preferences. The book could also be used in conjunction with a unit on animal behavior. --Lauren Peterson

PreS-K-A tidy rhyme describes the location and fare for a variety of creatures' snacks: "I like a snack on an iceberg./I like a snack in a tree./Pecking our corn in the barnyard/is perfect for Mama and me." First-person menu preferences are delivered by a polar bear, woodpecker, chick, cow, elephant, puppy, goat, and girl, among others. Full-color artwork in a realistic style celebrates a variety of habitats and captures a pleasing array of textures and light. Pick this tidbit as a light introduction to nutrition study or to fill a few minutes before snack time.-Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA (c) Copyright 2010.
