摘要
摘要
Tackling major themes like animal senses, defenses, movement and migration, the search for food, and interrelationships between animals, the Animal Survival series provides the keys to unlock a world of insight and understanding about the animal world as a whole. Through accurate, easy-to-understand explanations and exciting, full-color photographs, young readers are invited to experience the lifestyles of some of the most fascinating members of the animal kingdom, as well as their various relationships with Earth's diverse environments.
The enormous variety in the animal kingdom has come about over the course of millions of years, in part as a result of intense competition for food. Different animals have evolved quite specialized diets, and many have developed unique methods of acquiring and/or ingesting their meals. From herbivores to meateaters, from chasers to trappers, from hunters to scavengers, this lucid and comprehensive treatment takes an exciting look into all the diverse ways that animals feed themselves.

Gr 3-5ÄThese series titles look at a particular aspect of animal life and show how it varies among species. Each two-page chapter examines a different topic in general terms and uses specific animals as examples. For the most part, the texts focus on how animals differ and how they can be grouped by those differences (e.g., carnivores vs. herbivores, methods of defense, or ways of moving). The information is very general with little space devoted to individual creatures, and even the differences are sketchily drawn. Fascinating full-color photos help, but can't salvage the dry, often awkward text. These books ambitiously attempt to provide a vast amount of information, but perhaps that ambition is their downfall. There is certainly not enough detail for reports, and even browsers will be left wanting more. Any of the better-focused books that are already available on these subjects would be better choices.ÄArwen Marshall, New York Public Library (c) Copyright 2010. Each of these five books is organized around an activity vital to animals' survival. Subjects related to the main topics are briefly explored on each double-page spread with examples drawn from across the animal kingdom. In an uninspired design, plenty of captioned color photos illustrate the dry texts. Readers will glean a few facts about many animals--from fleas to elephants--but will need to look elsewhere for more substantive information. Bib., glos., ind. (c) Copyright 2010.
