Gr 5-8Serviceable additions, illustrated with average-quality, black-and-white photographs. Bredeson concentrates on the path of Ginsburg's career, mentioning little about her childhood. The brief history of the U.S. Supreme Court will help readers understand just what her position entails. Old has written a solid, inspiring biography of Edelman, describing her youth, education, marriage and family life, and the creation of the Children's Defense Fund. She gives an overview of the Jim Crow laws and of life for blacks in the South before and during the civil rights movement. Both Steven Otfinoski's Marian Wright Edelman (Blackbirch, 1991) and Joann J. Burch's Marian Wright Edelman (Millbrook, 1994) are geared to a younger audience. Four well-researched books stress that these prominent individuals, who have become models of achievement for all people, have not allowed prejudice against their gender, race, or religion to hold them back. Of the four books, 'Ginsburg' and 'Edelman' are the most carefully crafted. All include quotes from primary sources, as well as extensive source notes. Reproduction of the black-and-white photographs is uneven. Bib., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
