(Producer) This surgery is to locates and removes the portion of the brain that causes epileptic seizures. Treatment begins with a comprehensive assessment of the patient: recording seizures and taking pictures of the brain. This allows Dr. Allan Friedman and Dr. Rodney A. Radke, surgeons at the Duke University Medical Center, to isolate the part of the brain that is causing epileptic seizures. Next, the surgical team removes a portion of the skull to map different brain areas; they stimulatedifferent areas of the exposed brain and note the patient's response. Finally, the surgeons identify the area associated with the problem and remove it.
