摘要
摘要
This encyclopedia is a biographical dictionary of some 1,000 women artists of the American West. The product of a twenty-year, coast-to-coast research project by authors Phil Kovinick and Marian Yoshiki-Kovinick, it offers accurate, concise introductions to women painters, graphic artists, and sculptors, all of whom achieved recognition as depictors of Western subjects between the 1840s and 1980. Their styles range from representationalism to early modernism, while their works depict everything from bold landscapes and scenes of intensive action to studies of Native Americans, pioneers, ranchers, farmers, wildlife, and flora.

The result of more than 20 years of research, this encyclopedia offers the most complete information to date on women artists, both US and foreign, who have depicted the American West. It far surpasses Doris O. Dawdy's Artists of the American West: A Biographical Dictionary (3v., CH, Mar'75), the brief entries in Chris Petteys's groundbreaking Dictionary of Women Artists: An International Dictionary of Women Artists Born before 1900 (CH, Jul'85), and even Delia Gaze's magnum opus Dictionary of Women Artists (CH, Mar'98). Entries for artists are alphabetically arranged and offer facts about their lives and careers, emphasizing their Western subject matter, selected lists of exhibitions, public collections holding their work, and bibliographies. Entries have two sections; the second uses a more concise format, omitting the essays found in the main text. Artists are included if they are painters, graphic artists, or sculptors who have worked in styles ranging from realism to early modernism and gained acclaim before 1980; if they have shown work in regionally important exhibitions; if they have appeared in major publications; or if they are represented in important collections. Black-and-white reproductions accompany about half the entries. An index of names, a list of abbreviations, and a selected bibliography support the text. An important purchase for any library supporting programs in art history, fine arts, or American studies. S. M. Klos; University of Oregon

A single-volume "virtual archive" of amazing proportions and precision by two dedicated scholars, this well-illustrated and meticulously documented concise biographical dictionary covers over 1000 women artists, mostly unknown. With few exceptions, these individuals are not covered by the Dictionary of Women Artists (LJ 12/97). The multitude of adventurous, mostly U.S. women painters, graphic artists, and sculptors presented here worked in or created images of the 17 westernmost contiguous American states from 1840 to 1980. Research for this volume, which took 20 years, included extensive interviews and the investigation of original documents, obituaries, and grave markers. The results reveals a commonality of lifestyle patterns, education, exhibition history, and so on. Many of the artists were peripateticHelen Chain (1849-92), called "Trot" by family members for her love of travel and mountain climbing, was lost at sea during a typhoon in the China Sea.
