Akira Kurosawa managed to challenge the supremacy of his own earlier masterpiece The Seven Samurai with this late-career epic, essentially a retelling of King Lear. Previously available in egregiously cropped videotape, as well as rather muddy-looking albeit letterboxed laserdisc and DVD, this remastered release restores the vibrantly colorful film to its onetime theatrical glory. Includes two commentaries, plus more extras. Replace all other copies with this essential purchase. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
