Gr 7 Up-James Hilton's classic story of the beloved teacher at an English boys' school in the late 1800s and early 1900s receives a faithful treatment that truly evokes the place and times of Mr. Chipping. Brookfield School is depicted with historical accuracy, depth, and texture, and all the actors are excellent. Martin Clunes is extraordinary as the man who arrives as an unsure neophyte who wishes only to teach Latin and, in the end, devotes his life to the school. His romance and marriage to Kathie is moving without being sentimental, and Victoria Hamilton brings a freshness and spirit to the character that helps viewers understand the fondness that everyone develops for her. Clunes portrays the impact her loss has on Chipping with highly effective minimalism. Production values are exemplary, and viewers become immersed in the school and its time. This production brings both the historical period and the culture of the English public school to life in a way that is accessible to both students and adults. The impact of World War I on the generation who fought it is clearly shown, and the horror of war is captured without any battlefield scenes-solely by showing its impact on the school and the men who fought it. This excellent production would be an outstanding addition to both school and public libraries.-Melody A. Moxley, Rowan Public Library, Salisbury, NC (c) Copyright 2010. Based on James Hilton's classic novel, this Masterpiece Theatre episode is one of many filmed versions of the story of Arthur Chipping and his years as teacher and headmaster at an English boys' boarding school. The story covers 50 years, from Mr. Chips's acceptance of a temporary job as master and his marriage through World War I and then his final tenure. Chips and his wife create a full and rich life within the sheltered boundaries of the school, inspiring students and teachers alike, until tragedy strikes. Martin Clunes does a masterful job as Mr. Chips. This inspiring and heartwarming story of love and transformation will be enjoyed by all ages. Recommended, particularly for public libraries.-Julia Stump, Voorheesville P.L., NY (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
