Gr 9 Up-Demographics of developed countries reveal declining birth rates and rising numbers of elderly. Developing nations face exploding birth rates. Actor Oliver Platt narrates, experts pontificate, and exceptional visuals inform and explain the issues. India needs to increase food production and tackle huge environmental problems caused by its large population. Like many developing states, India needs to improve the status of women, providing them with economic opportunities. In Japan, population is decreasing and by 2050 one in three people will be over age 65. Then there will be not enough workers or consumers to support the welfare state. Despite AIDS deaths, sub-Sahara Africa has a fast-growing population. The need for jobs and food creates environmental consequences such as deforestation. Once again, the education and liberation of women is key. "China Revs Up," the second segment, explores that country's burgeoning, affluent, consumer-oriented society. The nation is at a crossroads and must make decisions that will affect the entire world. Continued environmental degradation caused by industrial poisons and the burning of coal, and carbon dioxide emissions from China's increasing number of automobiles contribute to global warming. Fearing job losses, the Chinese government doesn't enforce pollution cleanup. A need for new fuels is a challenge not only for China, but for the entire world. This timely, well-scripted, and visually stunning program examines worldwide problems. Classes across the curriculum can utilize it to gain a broader perspective of today's human family.-Patricia Ann Owens, Wabash Valley College, Mt. Carmel, IL (c) Copyright 2010.
