Gr 7 Up-Mountain of Ice compares a modern-day ascension of Mount Vinson in Antarctica by mountaineers Conrad Anker and Jon Krakauer and their team to the 1911 race for the South Pole by Robert Falcon Scott and Roald Amundsen. Male narration is supplemented by the observations and recollections of expedition members, who describe the expedition's progress and their impressions of the journey. Anker shows that careful preparation of gear, accurate measurement of food required, and adequate training of team members is necessary for a successful climb. As the mountaineers travel toward Mount Vinson, segments about Amundsen and Scott illustrate why Amundsen's group returned safely and Scott's group did not. The video documents the adventure of the climb and the significance of the data gathered to assess changes in glacier size. The data will be used to make predictions about sea levels and changes in the Earth's climate. It also explains how Antarctic glaciers affect global temperatures and can contribute to global warming. Technical quality is outstanding, and the breathing-taking photography highlights the stark beauty of the Antarctic and shows the dangerous aspects of living and exploring in the hostile environment. Students in both science and history classes will relate to the challenges and adventures of this expedition and will gain an understanding of the history of Antarctica expeditions and their scientific importance.-Mary Young, Rolla Junior High School, MO (c) Copyright 2010.
