Gr 5 Up-- A quick, up-to-date overview of volcanology. A brief history covers the 1,300 eruptions during the past 10,000 years with a list of the worst disasters since a.d. 1000. The various types of eruptions are spelled out with information about the effects of each. Special hazards of deadly gas pockets, tsunamis, and the social disruption caused by destruction of habitat are discussed. The terminology is professional and solid. Topics addressed include plate tectonics; transform faults and subduction zones are introduced with definitions, examples, and black-and-white illustrations. The writing is a careful mix of a scientist's accuracy and a historian's concern for a good story. --Elizabeth Morrissett, Alaska State Library, Juneau (c) Copyright 2010.
