Gr 3-4 This introduction to the what, where and why of volcanoes updates the information found in Susan Harris' Volcanoes (Watts, 1979). The new edition has been slightly reorganized, with some new pictures and diagrams. The complex geological phenomena which contribute to volcanoes are simplified and summarized to explain to beginners what volcanoes are, where they are most likely to occur and why. Vesuvius, Krakatoa and Mt. St. Helens are briefly described as important volcanoes of the past, and the volcanoes of our moon and Jupiter's moon Io are also represented. Hot springs and geysers, as associated with volcanoes, are described, and geothermal energy is briefly covered. Full-color illustrations, diagrams, photographs or maps appear on every page.
