Given that ``the meaning of success in the art world is as personal and wide-ranging as the art itself,'' Grant presents insights for anyone considering art as a career or a creative outlet. A contributing editor of American Artist and author of The Business of Being an Artist (Allworth Pr., 1991), Grant provides a look, at once brisk and authoritative, at the study and practice of professional art. In chapters titled ``Sources of Inspiration,'' ``Overcoming Mental Blocks,'' and ``Kindred Spirits,'' he presents thoughtful approaches to dealing with the ups and downs experienced by those learning to ``trust one's own vision.'' While the examples cited are experiences of painters and sculptors, the lessons and techniques shared could be beneficial to artists of all media. Grant includes facts on studio safety, developing skills, and selecting art materials and resource lists in the appendix.
