This volume is recommended for academic collections for two reasons. First, it contains a well-balanced set of essays representing an impressive range of viewpoints on ethical codes of conduct for international business. Second, it includes in an appendix the actual text of most existing codes, including not only well-known and widely accepted documents such as the Sullivan Principles and the Caux Principles but also codes proposed or generated by individual corporations and industries, by agencies of national governments, and by religious and consumer groups. The essayists include academic researchers, executives from companies deeply involved in multinational business operations, and representatives of several consumer, public interest, and religious organizations. The result is a useful all-in-one-volume survey of the values and the limitations of global codes of conduct for multinational corporations--a topic of obvious importance in an increasingly "globalized" economy. Although a few of the contributions are disappointing, e.g., warmed-over summaries of outdated studies or very general statements that neither raise nor answer important questions, the majority of the essays are supported by detailed research and demonstrate the substantial expertise and thorough commitment the authors bring to their particular topics.
