YA-A useful book for young people interested in outdoor jobs. Gartner is candid about service employees having to work long hours, weekends, and holidays. He stresses the fact that competition is keen, the pay isn't good, and that low turnover leads to limited opportunity for achievement. Still, many people compete for jobs with the NPS because of their love for the parks and their desire to work with the public and to help preserve natural resources. The author describes a wide range of career options that call for a variety of talents and backgrounds. He provides a short chapter on each and offers tips and information on training. The cover is attractive, but the text is illustrated by only a few black-and-white photographs. Three practical appendixes-a listing of the NPS regional offices, Seasonal Law Enforcement Training Program Schools, and pay scales as of 1992-are included. The text is readable, and presents detailed information in an accessible manner.-Patricia Noonan, Prince William Public Library System, Woodbridge, VA (c) Copyright 2010. These four guides look at careers in some not-so-usual areas.Working with animals and involvement in animal rights can be two distinctly different activities as Field explains in Animal Rights Activist. Although the text concentrates mainly on jobs within an animal rights organization, the variety presented gives a good idea of how skills that may not seem directly related to animal rights are important to the overall improvement of animals' lives. Appendixes include animal rights organizations, trade associations and organizations, a cruelty-free shopping guide, additional information, and further reading. The National Parks Service, a small, but ~unique agency in the U.S. Department of Interior, attracts more individuals than there are jobs available. Gartner describes being a part of the service as similar to working in a close-knit family atmosphere, something that is apparent in the scenarios and information presented concerning the employment opportunities. Appendixes include lists of National Park Service regional offices and seasonal law and enforcement training program schools, pay scales, and further readings. Rock Musician presents many aspects of becoming a rock musician, illustrating the vast knowledge and experience of Del Hopkins. Emphasis is continually directed toward a clear understanding of the business side of a musician's profession, which the Hopkins feel is vital to success. High school graduates and guidance counselors will find this one of the best books written on the subject. Appendixes include bookkeeping and recording contract samples as well as further readings and a glossary. The work of a firefighter is one of the riskiest jobs there is. The Lees provide an in-depth study of firefighting, with a detailed description of the different levels of employment and a chapter concerning women in the field. Appendixes include organizations and publications and a glossary. ~--Kathy Bonnar
