Gr 5-8 An enjoyable introduction to an unpublicized side of the U.S. military forces. Describing the history and duties of the Military Airlift Command (MAC) from its 1941 origins as the Air Corps Ferrying Command and on through its successors, the Air Transport Command and Military Air Transport Service, Airlift covers MAC's humanitarian relief missions as well as its military applications. Included are passages on airdrops, ambulance/rescue work, Air Force One, weather reconnaissance services and airborne soldiers. Individual missions mentioned include the ``Hump'' route of World War II, flying a reconnaissance airplane through a hurricane, the Berlin Airlift and the rescue of wounded troops. Utilitarian photos enhance the entertaining and informative text; an appendix with photos and brief data and description of 12 aircraft used by MAC and its predecessors is certain to please aviation fans. An impressive cover photo of the gargantuan C-5/Galaxy will attract browsers, and those who stay to read will be well rewarded for their efforts. Jeffrey A.
