Both have black-and-white photographs, averaging half a page in size and appropriately locat ed within the text. Ellis attempts to give a total history of U.S. intelligence efforts from the Revolutionary War on as well as delineating the CIA, then and now. She does an excellent job in the limited num ber of pages, and is current through Wil liam Casey's death in May, 1987. Fisch's book is easier to read, as he adheres to a steady theme, civilian control of a military force. There are some obvious omis sionsDouglas MacArthur is not men tioned anywhere, and Eisenhower is men tioned only as President. The index is incomplete. Alfred M. Cobb, Woodcliff Lake School, N.J. Gr. 5-9. Designed as an introduction to the history and function of various governmental departments, this series focuses here on two diverse but crucial agencies. With spying and espionage natural attractions, Ellis' book will have immediate appeal; what readers will find, however, is a straightforward account of the CIA's inner workings rather than a sensationalized, behind-the-scenes view. The author traces the agency from its forerunners and early years through the Dulles, Colby, Bush, and Casey directorships and weaves in descriptions of various intelligence and counterintelligence activities. Brief career information is also given. Mackintosh's exploration of the National Park Service is similar in tone. In addition to giving researchers material on the history, structure, and services of the department, those doing reports on conservation and environmental concerns may also find this helpful. Black-and-white photographs are included and glossary and selected references are appended. BE.
