This is a revised and updated patient care handbook reflecting the improved, important, intensive services ancillary to diagnosis and therapy required by patients with pediatric malignancies. The first edition was published in 1993. The structure is an outline style providing succinct definitions and statements followed by recommendations. This text is designed to make up-to-date recommendations for supportive care of pediatric patients. A new edition is needed to update information in this rapidly changing field. New chapters have been added which cover hemorrhagic and thrombotic complications, the care of stem cell transplant patients, alternative medicine, home care, and the terminal care of children with cancer. This handbook is written for any healthcare giver who actually writes or responds to orders or recommendations regarding the clinical care of pediatric cancer patients. The editor and contributing authors are recognized medical and allied health professionals in pediat ric oncology. The text is somewhat didactic, giving a "cookbook" approach to management with little discussion of the derivation of current management strategies. The illustrations are limited to a few figures, mostly algorithms and tables which are pertinent to the form of the handbook. The references are pertinent and current, but are not specific citations. The index is adequate for the outline format, but not for details. This is a most useful, inexpensive text on the subject of the supportive or clinical care of pediatric cancer patients. It can be consulted for quick review and is up-to-date. The editor has succeeded in his stated aim of providing a handbook for all those participating in the care of pediatric oncology patients.
