This superb critical collection catalog is the first of two to appear documenting the magnificent American sculpture collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There are wonderful photographs by Jerry L. Thompson; current scholarship, which utilizes much MMA archival material; excellent writing and individual entries on 198 works by some 61 sculptors born before 1865 by Lauretta Dimmick, Donna J. Hassler, and Thayer Tolles; and Tolles's most welcome "History of the Metropolitan Museum's American Sculpture Collection." The collection was formed from the Museum's beginning in the mid-1870s, and had the advantage of being developed by a sculptor of the caliber of John Quincy Adams Ward. Daniel Chester French, primarily responsible for building the Museum's collection during the first three decades of the last century, followed him. The catalog is arranged chronologically by sculptors' birth date, beginning with Horatio Greenough in 1805 and ending with Charles Marion Russell in 1864. In between are the well- and the lesser-known, such as Hiram Powers, Shobal Clevenger, Thomas Crawford, William Rimmer, Erastus Dow Palmer, William Wetmore Story, Randolph Rogers, Leonard Wells Volk, Ward, Olin Warner, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, French, Frederick Remington, George Grey Barnard, and Frederick William MacMonnies. Index of artists and titles; accession concordance; catalog numbers. Recommended for all collections of American art. All levels. J. Weidman; Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
