Nominated for an Academy Award (Feature Documentary) in 1996, The Line King is an affectionate portrait of caricaturist Al Hirschfeld (1903-2003). With some art training at the Art Students League in New York City, he was recognized, at an early age, for his considerable talents; in 1921, at the age of 18 and following a brief job at Samuel Goldwyn Studios, he became art director at Selznick Pictures. Undoubtedly, however, he is best known for the drawings he created for the New York Times, where he had an exclusive contract beginning in 1929. For more than 60 years, Hirschfeld chronicled the world of entertainment. With his fluent and seemingly effortless use of line, he had a remarkable facility for drawing recognizable images that also captured the spirit and personality of performing arts luminaries. Commentary by the artist, his family, and colleagues illuminates his personal life and his career. This thoroughly entertaining DVD includes inspiring footage of Hirschfeld, at age 99, creating a caricature of Paul Newman-the artist, with steady hand, as fascinated with line and caricature as he was in his youth. Highly recommended for all general library collections.-Joan Stahl, Univ. of Maryland Lib., College Park (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
