摘要
Author Karen Zeinert delves into the work of suicidologists, who try to understand the phenomenon of suicide by looking at who commits suicide, how they do it, and why. She also researches the movement to legalize physician-assisted suicide. Zeinert presents the ethical and legal debates surrounding this controversial medical practice, which is currently in the news.

《儿童读物杂志》(Horn Book)书评
This concise yet thorough book objectively discusses everything from historical views on suicide to the modern right-to-die issue. The final pages dispense advice on helping the loved ones of suicide victims. Superfluous black-and-white photos are sometimes unintentionally funny--a caption commenting on suicide rates in rural areas is illustrated with a photo of cows lying down in a field. Bib., ind. 《书目》(Booklist)书评
Gr. 6^-12. In books covering emotionally charged topics, the use of an unimpassioned voice allows readers to assess the information more rationally. Zeinert uses a straightforward approach in this book, which is neither didactic nor sensationalized in terms of language. Her evenhanded presentation includes some startling data about people who commit suicide and the loved ones left behind. After tracing suicide's historic past (documented back to the ancient Egyptians), she briefly analyzes victim fatality grouped by age, sex, ethnicity, location, religion, and sexual orientation. Later chapters become even more interesting, as she turns to suicidal patterns (the how, why, when, and where) and introduces terms such as shadow and cluster suicide. Discussion of specific individuals--among them, Karen Ann Quinlan and Dr. Jack Kevorkian--make up the bulk of the chapter on assisted suicide, and brief coverage concerning prevention and dealing with grief round out the text. Useful for speeches and reports. Chapter notes and Web sites are provided. --Roger Leslie
