摘要
摘要
This book introduces the work of an important medieval Islamic philosopher who is little known outside the Persian world. Afdal al-Din Kashani was a contemporary of a number of important Muslim thinkers, including Averroes and Ibn al-Arabi. Kashani did not write for advanced students of philosophy but rather for beginners. In the main body of his work, he offers especially clear and insightful expositions of various philosophical positions, making him an invaluable resource for those who would like to learn the basic principles and arguments of this philosophical tradition but do not have a strong background in philosophy. Here, Chittick uses Kashani and his work to introduce the basic issues and arguments of Islamic philosophy to modern readers.

^D.Afdal al-Dn K~sh~n (c.1140-1213/4), or "Baba ^D.Afdal," as he is often known, was a Sufi-influenced philosopher younger than Averroes and older than al-Rumi. He wrote primarily in Persian rather than the Arabic favored by most philosophers, in part to make his teachings more accessible to students at an earlier stage of their search. This volume lists some 52 works, of which six are major works of his own and five are translations from Arabic. Other works include his shorter essays, letters, and poetry, mostly quatrains (Ruba'iyyat stanzas). Besides providing translations of an extensive selection of ^D.Afdal's works, Chittick (SUNY, Stony Brook) has done a masterful job of making ^D.Afdal's guidance in the search for al-Haqq (which he translates as "the Real") accessible to students of Islamic philosophy who do not read Persian. Although these translations are not for all undergraduates, Chittick's poetic rendition of the quatrains makes them a joy to read. A highly detailed index of names and contexts will be indispensable to students and scholars. For upper-division undergraduates and above. S. Ward University of Denver
