PreS-K-- A book that succeeds as a preschool read-aloud or a bedtime story, and is a good choice for parents who are looking for a lighthearted look at separation anxiety. When the queen goes on a trip, young Princess Bee cannot fall asleep. Her brother and sister try to help, but their stories are too short. ``Mum never, EVER runs out of story before I fall asleep,'' grumbles Bee. Comforting words from her father encourage Bee to find the solution to her problem within herself. Asher's lilting text begs to be read aloud (with a touch of a British accent and a brief bow in the direction of the royal family.) The humorous watercolors add to the appeal. Princess Bee sleeps in a bed shaped like a rabbit, and the other members of the royal family have equally special resting places. The Royal Big Sister is a bit of a tomboy; the Royal Big Brother tells Bee a swashbuckling tale. Their animated expressions and poor Bee's dejected look hit just the right note. Asher's gentle message is well delivered: traveling parents do return, and children do have the power to cope successfully with brief separations. --Gail C. Fiction: PB Mum, the queen, always tells Princess Bee her good-night story, so Bee is desolate until the queen returns from a short visit. Nobody in the family is successful in pinch-hitting for Mum. An inconsequential story, partly a mildly amusing satire on the trappings of royalty, with pleasant watercolors. Horn Rating: Marginal, seriously flawed, but with some redeeming quality. Even in the Royal Palace, a princess likes her own Mum to tell her a good-night story. When the Queen goes away for three days, Bee tries to make do with stories from her siblings, but only Dad is wise enough to realize that no one else can take the place of Mum. Lively, unassuming illustrations help make this a pleasant bedtime story, appropriate to share with either Mum or her surrogate. Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
