Misinformation, oversimplification, and a plodding style characterize this book. Statements such as, ``The summer drought of 1988 . . . has been linked to global warming,'' and ``The human being is the only living thing that has the ability to alter its environment'' are not infrequent. So technical is the definition of ``food chain'' in the glossary that it will be meaningless to young readers. The black-and-white photographs are fuzzy, and the diagrams are simplistic or so convoluted as to be useless. The book's only positive features are the inclusion of some up-to-date information and a discussion of overpopulation as the main cause of pollution. Well-presented information is readily available in Gay's Ozone (1989) and The Greenhouse Effect (1986), as well as in Stwertka's Industrial Pollution: Poisoning the Atmosphere (1989) or Wood's Pollution (1985, all Watts). --Meryl Silverstein, American Museum of Natural History, New York City (c) Copyright 2010.
