Serious study of popular culture is a fairly recent development, yet scholars in nearly all disciplines now engage with the material culture of the masses. Gr 9 Up-This "revision, expansion, and modification" of the three-volume The Handbook of American Popular Culture (Greenwood, 1989) offers overviews of various aspects of our culture. The 58 signed articles touch on topics from almanacs and amusement parks to pornography and propaganda, and from science fiction and self-help to television and young adult fiction. The selections cover trends from the 17th century to the present with a focus on the 20th century. The essays are informative and some are even fascinating, but the writing is uneven. Elizabeth Bell's piece on "do-it-yourselfers" is quite readable, while other selections are merely amassings of oddball data written in poorly constructed and lifeless sentences. The entries are followed by essays on available resources and reference works and end with thorough bibliographies. As a research tool pointing readers in other directions, this is a bountiful treasure chest, but there is one glaring error. James A. Von Schilling's article on the recording industry states that Beatles manager Brian Epstein died in 1998 (the actual date was 1967). The sometimes grainy, black-and-white photographs do not add much to the information. Sara and Tom Pendergast's five-volume Bowling, Beatniks, and Bell-Bottoms (UXL, 2002) focuses on the 20th century, decade by decade, with more details on items and trends and is the first choice for a resource on the topic.-Herman Sutter, Saint Agnes Academy, Houston, TX (c) Copyright 2010. Adopting Popular Culture Association founder Ray B. Browne's definition of popular culture as "all the experiences in life shared by people in common, generally though not necessarily disseminated by the mass media," the new version of this encyclopedia covers 58 topics in great detail. Combining the contents of the Handbook of American Popular Literature (Greenwood, 1988) and The Handbook of American Popular Culture (2d ed., Greenwood, 1989), the Guide has eliminated chapters on advertising, detective and mystery fiction, and gender studies as being exhaustively addressed in other works. Chapters have been added on amusement parks, do-it-yourself home improvement, housing, living history and reenactments, museums and collecting, and New Age movements. The introduction has been lifted intact from The Handbook of American Popular Culture, but the front matter includes a lengthy new essay on the study of popular culture by Michael Dunne. Articles, written by subject experts in generally readable (if not scintillating) prose, run between 20 and 50 pages in length. Each chapter includes a brief chronological survey of the development of the subject under consideration; a critical guide in essay form to the standard or most useful reference works, bibliographies, histories, critical studies, and journals; a description of research centers or sources of primary and secondary sources; and a checklist of works cited in the text. Aimed at a wide cross section of users, from reference librarians to general readers, the Guide serves as a sound source for research purposes as well as for interest reading. Some chapters (e.g., "Fashion" and "Television") include a pictorial section following the text of the chapter. Aside from the chapter-end illustrations, the text is amply illustrated in black-and-white photos and reproductions. The very extensive index provides a sound navigational aid. The lengthy topical essays of this resource make it a complement to the St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture (St. James, 2000), and it is recommended for large public and academic libraries.

Revised and expanded from Handbook of American Popular Culture, ed. by Inge (CH, May '90), Inge and Hall's work remains a good starting point for 58 topics that range from automobiles and fashion to pornography. Although the editors have added several new articles ("Amusement Parks," "Comic Books," "Housing," "Living History and Battlefield Reenactments, "Museums and Collecting," and "New Age Movements"), they have dropped "Advertising," "The Occult," "Musical Theatre and the Revue," "Physical Fitness," and "Stage Entertainment." Written by scholars, articles provide a brief historical introduction; a bibliographical essay on useful reference works, histories, critical studies, and research collections; and a comprehensive bibliography of works cited. Some essays, like "Jazz," have been revised extensively, while others, such as "Medicine and Physicians," have only minor changes. While the guide's scope remains arbitrary (there are separate articles covering music and jazz, but only a general article on sports, which gives short shrift to baseball), it provides a solid introduction and useful review of research for the areas covered. Since the "lively arts" were formally defined in the early part of the 20th century, a debate has ensued over what constitutes popular culture. High culture purists deny the significance of mass culture, yet the 60 articles in this academic yet accessible guide demonstrate the complex value of these common experiences. Editors Inge (English and humanities, Randolph-Macon Coll.) and Hall (English, Univ. of Louisville) have melded the Handbook of American Popular Culture with the Handbook of American Popular Literature-both Greenwood titles from the late 1980s still in print-to provide an up-to-date treatment of pop culture experience. Although the articles do not necessarily appear with the same title or in combination with the same genre, almost everything from the old sets now appears in the new set. The historical material is largely untouched, but all other entries have been updated or expanded, and new entries like "Living History and Battlefield Reenactments" have been added. Articles on a few relevant topics were cut owing to the abundant availability of source material, but the coverage remains comprehensive, with entries on mail-order catalogs, editorial cartoons, graffiti, leisure vehicles, propaganda, and other societal icons. Broader headings cover whole fields, such as music or children's literature. Contributed by informed scholars, who provide informative definitions and riveting historical outlines, these 30- to 40-page articles make for an ideal starting point for serious research. An excellent index, spanning over 250 pages, directs users to specific topics within the larger articles. A roster of research collections, an extensive bibliography, and the description of relevant reference works, subdivided by topic and all updated, follow each introductory set of essays.
