Emphasis of this text is on body weight, diet composition, management/control of obesity, and the mechanisms that explain/predict these variables. Major attention is given to the role of diet composition and exercise in the management of weight. Genetic and environmental factors are considered. Uniqueness of certain groups such as adolescents and the elderly are examined. The purpose is not clearly stated in the preface, however, it is apparent that this text is a compendium of the latest research in the area of weight control. As a scholar who is immensely interested in the subject matter, I find this text to be a valuable contribution to the field and a valuable addition to my library. It is clear to me that the objectives are worthy and have been met. Although there is no reference to the intended target audience, it is clear that it is intended for scholars and researchers in the field of obesity and weight control. This is certainly not an undergraduate text and would serve as a graduate level text only for those with a strong academic background. (Much of the text requires a background in biochemistry.) This is a text for the serious scholar who wants to know the latest research in the struggle to control weight. The studies cited and referenced throughout alone make this a valuable work. A substantial academic background is assumed. I read, in great detail, Chapters 1 and 6. Chapter 1 accomplishes what it intended -- to cite the research that addresses the relationships between exercise, macronutrients, and weight control. What is and is not known is addressed and the need for future research discussed. The significance of fat oxidation is a central theme of this chapter and the mechanisms of this phenomenon receive major attention. A knowledge of biochemistry is necessary to comprehend these mechanisms, but not for most of the chapter. Chapter 6 was of interest to me because I have a personal as well as academic interest in gerontology. (I'm a 6 0 year old college professor.) What stood out for me in this chapter was the extreme importance of resistance training for the elderly. The editor's position is shared by Kenneth Cooper, whom I just heard speak at a symposium. This chapter was highly readable and immensely informative. The studies cited and referenced are tremendously valuable for those endeavoring to keep up with the latest research. This is a high quality text for the serious scholar/practitioner/researcher who is interested in the latest research and the dynamics of weight control. It is excellent in its up-to-date references and studies. I give this work high marks. D. Craig Huddy, PhD(University of Texas El Paso College of Nursing & Health Sciences).
