Gr 4-7-Three consistent, accurate, and interesting titles in a series that literally "uncovers" history. Patent's enthusiasm for these subjects, which were buried for centuries, is contagious. In the first title, the author discusses the mystery behind the creation of China's Buried Warriors, the thousands of terra-cotta statues belonging to Qin Shihuangdi, the First Emperor of China, and excavated in 1974. The author's text makes for fascinating reading and the explanations are clear. While Pompeii gives no new information, students will appreciate its fresh and helpful format and illustrations. Spanish Main discusses the sinking of Spanish galleons near the Florida Keys in the 1600s and the subsequent salvage of their riches (including 27 tons of silver). It will interest fans of undersea exploration and budding historians alike. The books are well illustrated and include clear, color photographs of the sites and artifacts, reproductions, and maps. The glossaries are right on the mark, and excellent background information is highlighted in sidebars and time lines. Blending history and science, the first two books explore China's Qin Dynasty and Pompeii through archaeological finds left by both civilizations, while the third focuses on the salvage of a Spanish treasure galleon that sank in 1622. Occasional spreads provide background material and explain how contemporary researchers restore artifacts. Color photos and reproductions accompany the texts. Time lines are included. 《书目》(Booklist)书评
Gr. 6^-10. Part of the Frozen in Time series, these titles combine dramatic history with fascinating information. The amazing facts about the buried Chinese warriors will be new to many readers. Patent describes how in the 1970s thousands of life-size clay warriors were found near the central Chinese city of Xi'an in a huge underground vault along with life-size models of horses, weapons, and chariots. They had been there for 2,000 years, near the tomb of China's first emperor. Just as riveting is the account of archaeologists' work to reconstruct how people lived at that time. The Pompeii story, which begins with the volcanic eruption in A.D. 79, discusses the discovery of the buried city nearly 1,700 years later and focuses on what archaeology has revealed about life in the Roman Empire. The series' attractive magazine-type design will encourage browsing: full-page color illustrations, both archival and contemporary, appear opposite almost every page of detailed text. A time line, a glossary, and a bibliography of Web sites and reference sources are included. --Hazel Rochman
