Gr 7-10 When her older sister Alicia is deserted by her husband, 12-year-old Maggie Piper decides that all men are worthless and not to be trusted (the only exception being Alicia's newborn son, whom Maggie adores). Even her old friends and father seem to fit this pattern, and Maggie's worst fears are realized when Alicia becomes serious about another man. After some necessary growing-up, Maggie realizes that good can exist in almost anyone if given the chance. While this story does explore a useful topica youth's reaction to a sibling's divorceits execution leaves much to be desired, most noticeably in style and characterization. The characters remain undeveloped and shallow throughout, with the worst offender being Maggie, the central figure and narrator. The style is inconsistent and woefully lacking in humor, an essential ingredient for such a story. What does pass for humor has an almost desperate quality about it. What is missing is the light touch found in books by M. E. Kerr or Richard Peck. Denise Anton, Corn Belt Library System, Normal, Ill. (c) Copyright 2010. Gr. 4-6. Bates stretches herself in this touching and often amusing story of a girl who butts up against the vagaries of the male species. Twelve-year-old Maggie is thrilled with her newborn nephew, David, but affection turns into full participatory child care when her brother-in-law deserts Maggie's sister, Alicia. Maggie, who actually liked Burl, is furious with herself for having been taken in so completely by his breezy charm. When Maggie starts looking around she realizes there is a lot wrong with men from her head-in-the clouds academician father to her classmate Todd, known for making faces at her and playing practical jokes. She is appalled when Alicia starts getting serious about Keith, the new man in her life, but eventually he restores Maggie's faith in men. The fairy-tale ending seems to come far too easily; the book would have benefited from something less pat. Nevertheless, Bates does a good job of showing why Maggie feels the way she does, bringing in reasons for these particular men's behavior and thus giving a more evenhanded picture of the male psyche.
