Gr 4-6 Despite the plethora of books on snakes, a well-organized, beautifully illustrated treatment of the subject is always welcome. This one provides an excellent introduction. It describes the general physical characteristics common to all snakes (including how their senses of smell, sight, hearing, and heat detection operate); outlines methods of locomotion employed by various species as well as their hunting and self-defense techniques, eating habits and reproductive cycles; and explains how the environment controls every snake's life cycle. Over 50 excellent color photos of snakes found around the world, plus six diagrams, accompany the clearly defined text. Captions identify the species portrayed, giving the scientific names of most, but not all, species. Similar information on snakes is readily availableLeen's Snakes (Holt, 1978); Hogner's A Book of Snakes (Crowell, 1966, o.p.); Cole's A Snake's Body (Morrow, 1981)but this book's attractive format and its outstanding color photos should make it a valuable addition to most school and public library collections. Gr. 4-6. Johnson takes a scientific approach in introducing these three species of wildlife, describing behavioral characteristics in a matter-of-fact manner. Descriptions of the life cycles, mating, breeding, and environments are supplemented by striking full-color photographs with concise, well-stated captions. In addition to the basic material, Fireflies includes an explanation of bioluminescence, the chemical ability to give light; Snakes gives detailed diagrams and commentary on the various ways snakes move; and Tree Frogs reports on the unusual egg-laying habits of these tree dwellers. Readers will come away with a sounder understanding of these creatures and should find the close-up photographs fascinating. Glossaries appended. BE.
