摘要
摘要
Contains 7,000 terms and concepts with see and see also references, but not pronunciations. Fifty pages of full-color illustrations, many of which make prodigal use of space and appear apart from their articles. Has: 850 biographical entries; tables, including Nobel laureates; a glossary of terms. Lacks: high-temp. superconductivity; supercollider; string theory. An attractive book, may induce school children to a deeper study of science, but provides no bibliographic guidance. For classroom use below the college level. This one-volume encyclopedic dictionary, defining approximately 7,000 terms, fills an important need in the area of general science reference sources. A distinct feature is the length (one to three paragraphs) of the descriptive entries. Compared to other one-volume science dictionaries with standard one or two sentence entries, this reference source provides significantly more information on virtually every science topic. This work would be especially appropriate for libraries without large, multivolume science encyclopedias. The work also is well organized, with cross-references between entries and from entries to illustrations. The colorful illustrations provide summaries of or show sequences within major scientific subjects. This dictionary would appeal to a broad audience. Users from general readers with science interests through upper-division undergraduate students would find this reference work serviceable and very interesting. -C. J.
