摘要
摘要
A comprehensive dictionary of the history, people, theories, and ideas that have impacted contemporary international politics. It contains clear and interesting accounts of all the obvious events (wars, treaties, conferences, crises) as well as the intellectual events (theories, doctrines, concepts) that have influenced the century. The approximately 4,000 alphabetical entries are thoroughly cross- referenced, and organized by subject in an appendix. A number of the entries include illustrations, and a number include boxed asides that are particularly entertaining and/or illuminating. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.

This dictionary has more than 5,000 entries for terms and people that have influenced the political life of this century. Included are standard terms used in international politics and newer ones that have been culled from scholarly journals and newspapers. Excluded are words whose definitions would not be substantially different from that given in standard dictionaries. Shafritz is the author of many dictionaries of political science, such as The HarperCollins Dictionary of American Government and Politics. Entries range from 50 to 500 words. Numerous cross-references are given in the text and at the end of the entries. Black-and-white photographs and political cartoons enhance the definitions and are appropriately placed. Interspersed are boxes with pertinent charts (a list of Nobel Peace Prize recipients; a Persian Gulf crisis and war chronology) or quotations and anecdotes (how Alexander Haig "convinced" Kissinger he would be a great NATO supreme commander; an episode of one-upmanship between Khrushchev and Nixon). Acronyms are inconsistently handled: some are entries (SALT, ICBM); others have see references ("NATO--see North Atlantic Treaty Organization"). The biographical entries cover all periods of history, since many personalities continue to influence politicians and events in the twentieth century (e.g., Machiavelli, Hume, Sun-Tzu, Hobbes). An appendix of keywords organized by subject or country aids the researcher in finding articles on related topics that might otherwise be missed. This interesting and informative dictionary will be useful in any high school, academic, or public library. Dictionaries with lower pricetags may serve the same purpose for those on a tight budget, but the enjoyable boxed excerpts and illustrations make this volume worth adding to most collections. An excellent and resourceful reference tool for information about the language, terminology, and personalities of modern world history and politics. Shafritz, Williams, and Calinger have created a superior source that provides informed, concise, up-to-the-minute definitions as well as informative (and often entertaining) biographical sketches. The diversity of terms defined is striking. There are nearly five pages of definitions for some variation of "diplomat," "diplomacy," or "diplomatic"; many buzz words (e.g., "skinheads") are cited that do not appear in Walter Raymond's Dictionary of Politics (CH, Jan'93) or Oxford Companion to Politics of the World (CH, Sep'93). The latter two, surprisingly, do not contain a definition for Secretary of State, but Shafritz et al. give an excellent, balanced definition with biographical sketches for each American Secretary of State in the century. The book's strongest points are its biographical notes, which often offer quotes and asides that range from solemn to irreverent. Although biographical sketches of the most familiar figures of the century are excellent, the authors give equal attention to major figures often neglected in dictionary-style reference sources. A wide range of terms and personalities from the developing world, and consistent use of cross-references, quotes, and tables are included. First-rate, well conceived, and wittily written. Highly recommended for academic, college, school and personal libraries. M. Whichard; University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

This new title provides brief information on more than 5000 topics--events, people, and ideas--that have had an impact on world politics since 1900. The entries range from one paragraph to half a page in length and are often supplemented by chronologies, quotations, or excerpts. Recent events are well covered: a full page is devoted to the Persian Gulf Crisis, and the Russian Coup of 1991 receives more space than the Russian Revolution of 1917. This volume contains over 140 photographs, and broad subject access is provided in an appendix. It is ideally suited for the ready reference collections of public and academic libraries and is a good complement to the recent Oxford Companion to Politics of the World ( LJ 3/15/93), which contains fewer but much more substantial entries.-- Thomas Karel, Franklin & Marshall Coll.
