Gr 5-9Though this set is aimed at slightly more advanced students than the 8-volume Grolier Library of Environmental Concepts and Issues (1996), the most obvious difference between the two is structural; Grolier is arranged thematically, while here the approximately 600 articles are presented in alphabetical order, linked by plenty of cross-references, a general index, and a list of headings grouped by subject. As a result, this resource is easy to use for quick reference on specific topics related to pollution, energy and mineral resources, population and endangered wildlife, as well as important figures from Charles Darwin to Dian Fossey. For wider inquiry, it will require a great deal of flipping back and forth. For readers studying green politics, national standards, international conventions and organizations, or environmental legislation, it may be worth the effort, though, for these areas are covered with particular thoroughness. Neither the writers, nor their sources, are cited. The level of information is apt for the intended audience, special terms are defined in nearby glossary boxes, and the pro-conservation slant is judiciously gentle, e.g., "Nuclear Power PlantGood News and Bad"; "Progress on Western Water Rights." The page layout is full but uncluttered, even though some of the sharp color photos overlap to make more room for text. Macmillan has published two science sets designed specifically for middle-school and junior-high-school students. Originally published in 1991 by a British company for a U.S. audience, Macmillan Encyclopedia of Science covers a different topic in each of its 12 volumes: Matter and Energy, The Heavens, The Earth, Life on Earth, Plants and Animals, Body and Health, The Environment, Industry, Fuel and Power, Transportation, Communication, and Tools and Tomorrow. The target audience is students in grades 4 through 8. The set has been updated and revised to reflect some of the latest developments in science and technology. A volume-by-volume examination shows that some material has been rewritten and information on new scientific trends and developments has been added, although generally not in detail. The topics that have been revised and updated include advances in space telescopes, space probes, computer components, CD-ROMs, the Internet, environmental issues, cement and concrete methods, lasers, and the maglev train. Arrangement is topical. Major topics are broken down into 8 to 10 smaller areas, which are further divided into chapters of 6 to 12 pages. Each chapter is introduced with an expanded "Spot Facts," minus the large illustration used in the earlier edition. Each volume is individually indexed, with a cumulative index to the set in volume 12. Each volume also includes units of measurement, a brief explanation of exponential numbers, a list of abbreviations, and a selection of titles for further reading. The latter section has been thoroughly updated in all volumes and includes primarily U.S. titles published since 1990. The set is copiously illustrated with full-color photographs, computer-generated art, drawings, charts, and diagrams, with captions that extend the textual information. Here, too, revision and updating were noted. Occasionally, colors are brighter and sharper in the earlier edition; however, the art in the revised set is satisfactory. The cover illustrations have been appealingly redesigned. A few British spellings that occurred in the 1991 edition, such as colour, have been Americanized. Some statements have been clarified; for example, the 1991 edition says, "The automobile is a lethal weapon"; the 1997 edition says, "The automobile can be lethal." The set includes both metric and U.S. equivalent measurements. Both in terms of content and structure, Macmillan Encyclopedia of the Environment is suitable for a more sophisticated audience. It is an attractive set of alphabetically arranged articles about many different aspects of environmentalism. Included are scientific concepts, such as ecology, plate tectonics, and symbiosis; environmental concerns, such as deforestation, desertification, and global warming; people important in environmentalism, such as Rachel Carson and John Muir; proposed environmental solutions, such as no-till agriculture and alternative energy sources; and environmental disasters. Also included are environmental agencies, laws, and agreements. Charts, illustrations, and maps are plentiful and informative. Vocabulary assistance is provided by special sidebars labeled "the language of the environment." See and see also references, as well as the use of block letters to indicate terms with entries of their own, link the reader to other parts of the text. There is a subject index and a general index for the set at the end of the alphabetical entries in volume 6. In addition to the indexes, there is a chronology of major environmental events and legislation in the U.S., directories of environmental organizations and U.S. government organizations with environmental responsibility, and a selected bibliography. Macmillan Encyclopedia of the Environment will find its greatest use at the middle-school and junior-high-school levels, although patrons of all ages will find it useful for quick reference. Its more specialized focus makes it a good supplement to general science encyclopedias

Aimed at junior and senior high school students but just as useful to adult readers, this six-volume set provides basic information about topics on conservation and the laws designed to protect the natural environment. Containing about 600 entries ranging from one paragraph to four pages, the work offers information in four major areas. First, it gives basic facts about the natural world and how it functions, offering entries as "habitat," "extinction," and "ecosystems." Second, it explores human interaction with nature in such entries such as "soil erosion," "solid and hazardous wastes," and "forest products." Third, it provides information about the methods and laws developed to conserve nature, such as the Clean Air and Water Acts, Superfund, and the National Park Service. Fourth, it considers ethical relationships with nature, covering individuals who have contributed much to environmental protection, e.g., Rachel Carson, Aldo Leopold, and Dian Fossey. An excellent feature is the 1000 color photographs, graphs, diagrams, and other illustrations that accompany the entries. At the end of Volume 6, a resource section lists major environmental events, names and addresses of environmental organizations, a selected bibliography, and an excellent index with numerous See also references. This is an outstanding, beautifully illustrated reference source for all age levels, including nonspecialist adults in public libraries as well as middle and high school libraries.Eva Lautemann, DeKalb Coll.
