Soon after, his father joins the society's sinister leader in an expedition to hunt down a Sasquatch specimen, and Dylan decides to go along. He hooks up with an old hermit who seems to be familiar with the area and the legend. When it appears that someone is following the old man, Dylan begins to suspect that his companion may be hiding a mysterious past. In addition, evidence that the Sasquatch may be more than a legend begins to accumulate and Dylan realizes he must prevent the society from killing them. With an exciting climax set amid a Mount Saint-Helens eruption, this fast-moving, suspenseful story provides lots of action and appeal.ÄElaine E. Encounters with the gentle Sasquatch, a new St. Helens eruption, and a fictionalized answer to one of the twentieth century's great true missing person stories takes the novel to some pretty far-out lengths, but the suspenseful prose almost always rings true. Four months later, another man claims to have seen the creature in the exact same spot--and he has pictures to prove it. Despite the fact that Mount Saint Helens is on the verge of erupting, a group sets out to bring the creature back, dead or alive. Dylan's dad is opposed to the idea, but he joins the team hoping to foil the plan. Concerned about the dangerous situation his dad has put himself in, Dylan enlists the aid of a retired biologist, and the unlikely pair follow the team up the rumbling mountain. Smith does a good job of convincing readers of the possibility of such creatures, but even readers who remain skeptical will recognize this book as a first-rate thriller.
