《学校图书馆杂志》(School Library Journal)书评
Gr 6-9-These series entries feature an attractive layout, readable typeface, plenty of white space, and informative sidebars and captions for the well-chosen, well-reproduced black-and-white archival photographs and prints. Young's prose is crisp, to-the-point, and insightful; he makes use of appropriate quotes, although they are not documented. The presentation of ``both sides'' of the events under discussion provides young readers with an opportunity to make their own judgments and/or decisions. Students may also be encouraged by these titles to read Jane C. Miner's Hiroshima and Nagasaki (Watts, 1984; o.p.) and Slavery (Greenhaven, 1992).-David A. 《儿童读物杂志》(Horn Book)书评
The text suggests military, political, and moral reasons for Lincoln's issuing the Emancipation Proclamation. By heavily stressing the first two, though, the book fails to live up to its stated purpose: to let the reader decide. A brief history of slavery in the United States and of the Civil War is provided. The numerous sidebars are printed in a shade of blue that makes them hard to read. Bib., glos., ind.
