Gr. 6-10. From the publisher's Landmark Supreme Court Cases series, these useful books fill in the political and social history leading up to their respective cases, present the main arguments before the Court, and summarize the justices' responses. They also examine the backgrounds and personalities of those involved. Dred Scott examines the pivotal pre-Civil War case in which a slave was denied his freedom and the Missouri Compromise was deemed unconstitutional, and it also shows the personal and historical consequences of the Supreme Court decision. Roe v. Wade describes the arguments and forces on both sides of the abortion debate as well as the backgrounds of the lawyers and plaintiff, the leanings of particular justices, and the changing interpretations of the case over the last few years. The books are illustrated with black-and-white photographs and engravings and provide a clear, well-organized introduction to each case. ~--Carolyn Phelan
