Gr 6-9Beginning with a ``Cast of Characters,'' Dudley explores the Watergate scandal up to the 1974 Supreme Court ruling on the release of Nixon's tapes. The author avoids making much commentary, depending more on the facts and public opinion. While straightforward and chronologicaland dramatic in its own rightthere's little sense of the tremendous impact this event had on the American public as the hearings were underway. Considering the time spent on describing the key players, descriptions of the sentencing and aftermath are surprisingly brief. The index is incomplete. Gold looks at the steps taken to bring the debate over abortion rights to the Supreme Court. Beginning with the story of a woman who sought an abortion after taking the drug thalidomide during pregnancy, the author outlines the history and status of abortion laws prior to the 1973 ruling. Although not a pro-and-con issues debate, the description of how a case is prepared and argued before the Supreme Court focuses on the abortion-rights camp. Photos portray ``Jane Roe,'' the Supreme Court justices, a thalidomide victim, and pro-abortion lawyers, but not the anti-abortion attorneys. However, by zeroing in on just one issue, readers get a good overview of the procedures involved in Supreme Court cases, especially the way opinions are written and handed down. The coverage of the post-1973 court cases, protests, and rulings is weaker; this complex issue and the aftermath of Roe v. Wade cannot be summarized in just a few pages.Susan Knorr, Milwaukee Public Library, WI (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Gr. 6-10. Focusing on the 1973 case of Roe v. Wade, this volume from the Supreme Court Decisions series discusses the constitutional right to abortion. Gold shows the climate of opinion in the country at the time and then traces the case from its beginnings in Texas to its argument before the U.S. Supreme Court and the written opinions of the justices to the continuing conflict in the wake of the Court's decision. Black-and-white photographs, varying in style and quality from posed portraits to snapshots, appear throughout the book. Source notes and a bibliography are appended.
