《学校图书馆杂志》(School Library Journal)书评
Gr 6-12-- This volume attempts to enlighten readers on the subjects of metamorphic rock, earth movements and plates, rocks on other planets, and quite a few other bits of geology. As a result, it is not entirely successful. Topics pop up in different sections, and history is superficial or mixed into various chapters to illustrate a particular idea. Many good details will alert readers to the work of geologists. The writing is a little dry for average students who might be intially attracted to the idea of studying rocks. A couple of brief paragraphs on radioactivity in rocks are good, and information on the use of seismic computer tomography (CT) is well described. A chapter on earth resources and mining covers clay and stones as well as minerals and gems; it is almost too quick an overview. Useful in a limited way, this book is not well organized and is incomplete in its coverage. Most of the material can be found in current textbooks, so it's not an essential purchase. --Elizabeth Morrissett, Alaska State Library, Juneau (c) Copyright 2010.
