《书目》(Booklist)书评
Like the other titles in the New York Public Library series, this book was compiled by free-lance writers. In what the editor terms a "master Rolodex" for the lay researcher, six sources of information are listed: reference books; telephone, government, and picture sources; special collections; and electronic databases. Most of these sources are then broken down by broad subjects--ecology, education, medicine and health, etc. The government sources chapter is broken down by agency. The reference-books chapter is a mini-Guide to Reference Books: an annotated bibliography of standard works likely to be found in most medium-size public libraries. A few outdated editions are listed, but in general coverage is current. The telephone- and government-sources chapters list telephone numbers of associations and government agencies. The latter chapter is like an abbreviated Lesko's Info-Power. The picture-sources chapter lists both commercial sources of illustrations and libraries and museums. The chapter on special collections in libraries is a smaller Ash's Subject Collections. The electronic databases chapter includes over 800 annotated listings, each noting which of the four most popular online services (BRS, CompuServe, DIALOG, and ORBIT) carries the database. The index merely uses the broad subject headings from each chapter. This book was clearly intended to be a desk reference for the researcher--there is little new here for the librarian. Many public and academic libraries will own fuller directories for all six of these sources of information. However, high school and small public libraries that don't own those other large directories may find the Book of How and Where to Look It Up a good buy; larger libraries may want a copy for the circulating collection. The stately stone lion on the cover instantly announces this is another in the well-received series of Stonesong reference books. Unlike its browsable predecessors ( The New York Public Library Book of Chronologies , LJ 1/91; The New York Public Library Desk Reference , LJ 7/89), this is a mixture of bibliographic and directory information and thus may re ceive more use by librarians performing reference duties than by the general public. The book consists of six sections, covering Reference Books, Telephone, Government, and Picture sources, Special Collections, and Electronic Data bases. Each section is prefaced by basic advice on how to do research, an overview of the types of tools that exist, and an individualized subject index full of ``see'' and ``see also'' references. Within each category, entries are alphabetical by subject. Despite this accessible format, a master index, thorough and particularly graphic, assures that any information in the book will be found by the experienced and uninitiated alike. Virtually all entries are annotated and describe the contents of books, the scope of collections, and the services of agencies. Inclusions in each section are of necessity highly selective, and this volume strives to update rather than supplant such standards as Eugene P. Sheehy's Guide to Reference Books (American Library Assn., 1986), Lee Ash's Subject Collections (Bowker, 1985. 6th ed.), or the Washington Information Directory (Congressional Quarterly, 1991). It will prove an outstanding pur chase for smaller libraries, and larger ones will welcome it as a ready reference tool at the public service desk. This reviewer's only criticism is with the gratuitous use of a product trade name in the text. Carefully produced and reasonably priced, this excellent work is for public and university libraries.-- James Moffet, Baldwin P.L., Birmingham, Mich. (c) Copyright 2010.
