This handy resource provides background information on the history, benefits, and uses of pathfinders. Organization, accessibility issues, and examples of exemplary pathfinders are included. Some technical know-how of HTML and Web-page design is necessary to understanding their conception and manipulation. The majority of the manual consists of 100 "ready-to-use" pathfinders for academic, school, and public libraries. They list reference and other books, Web sites, organizations, and subject headings. A CD-ROM supplies the basic components of a pathfinder, a blank template, and all 100 of the suggested pathfinders, both in XHTML with Cascading Style Sheets and text-only versions. Topics include African-American history, ancient cultures, college search, mythology, buying a car, Hispanic heritage, and contemporary issues. All of the entries can be edited using any Web-editing software that supports XHTML or used "as is." Current research is used to support points. A clear writing style and efficient organization, along with the use of screen shots, make the content easily accessible. A suggested list of pathfinders for different types of libraries helps to streamline the information. Professional staff who are engaged in the process of creating electronic portals will utilize and appreciate this helpful manual.-Beth Jones, Shelby County High School, Shelbyville, KY (c) Copyright 2010. This guidebook, with an accompanying CD-ROM, aims to reach and serve users before they are physically at the library. The author has extensive experience, including serving as a virtual library administrator and contributing editor of the "Tech Talk" column in Public Libraries.0 The book is divided into Creating Pathfinders0 and 100 Ready-to-Use Pathfinders,0 ranging from "Adoption" to "World War II." The finding aids are educational and practical. The very helpful CD-ROM has cascading style sheets for easy upload to the library Web site. Libraries can copy or modify the pathfinders, create new ones, or customize them from the disc. The author emphasizes that the library Web site should be a functional tool, and good pathfinders provide a starting point, facilitate research, and promote awareness. Many practical tips and exemplary finders are provided. The focus throughout is to make it easy for the librarian to serve the user. --Arthur Meyers Copyright 2005 Booklist
