摘要
摘要
This authoritative work comprehensively reviews what is known about personality disorders, including vital information to guide clinical decision making. Leading experts synthesize contemporary thinking about the classification, etiologies, and development of these complex disorders. Diagnostic issues are explored, and available assessment instruments are discussed. The Handbook provides in-depth coverage of all commonly used psychotherapeutic and pharmacological treatments, with particular attention to the empirical evidence for each approach. Also addressed are special treatment modalities, such as day programs and group therapy, and forensic issues.

This is a comprehensive book covers personality disorders from theory to assessment to treatment. This book has been substantially revised and updated since the popular original book was published in 2001. There are new topics as well, including conceptual models, research methods and new directions, updates on specific diagnoses, and the latest intervention approaches. The book is aimed at clinicians and researchers interested in understanding and working with patients who have personality disorders. It is written at an advanced level in terms of conceptual and historical understanding, but it is readily consumable by professionals and likely graduate students in psychology. The author and contributors represent a diverse and knowledgeable cadre of scholars. Part 1 discusses historical and conceptual issues in a scientific and balanced manner, while also addressing areas where nonscientific forces might stifle or derail progress on this topic. The next few sections address onset, development, and epidemiology. The final sections are focused on assessment and intervention. The chapters are incredibly detailed and comprehensive, and discuss key issues even if somewhat controversial or unsettled. The references are current and limitations in knowledge are appropriately disclosed. The book is geared towards delivering foundational and factual information rather than providing a how-to guide, which works well as there are other resources available on specific instruments to use in assessment or treatment approaches. Most other books treat personality disorders at a surface level or as an afterthought, but this one is a valuable resource for truly understanding the depths of personality disorders and the recent developments in our understanding of them, along with interventions. The extensive updates make this a worthwhile addition. Christopher J Graver, PhD, ABPP-CN(Madigan Healthcare System). Copyright 2018, Doody Enterprises, Inc.
