Feminism. Child care and childcare development. Youth violence. Welfare. Nontraditional families and family values.
This extensive overview of this burgeoning field includes everything from a detailed history and statistics comparing trends in the United States and abroad to key legislation and legal cases. It gives biographical sketches of well-known activists like Betty Friedan, Arle Hothschild, and Rosabeth Moss Kanter. Lesser-known advocates like James A. Levine, director of the Fatherhood Project at the Family and Work Institute and MIT professor Lotte Bailyn, who believes work should be organized around tasks, not time, are also included.

This book delivers what it promises: a short, clear summary of subjects subsumed in the title, plus some international comparisons. Stebbins, a librarian who has made the topic of work and family her specialty, presents information and descriptions of sources to enable the reader to pursue various issues related to this topic. She provides a referenced overview of the field, which touches on many topics including women's and men's health, the gender gap in earnings, new roles for men, child care and elder care, corporate programs, issues for minorities, and important events from 1776 to 1999. Included are many annotated lists relating to the subject: US and international statistics, US laws, scholars, organizations, books, journals, videos, and Web pages. Finally, there is a glossary of terms. Since this small book covers such a large area, no issue is treated in depth. However, the selection and summary of topics is very well done. The only omission this reviewer noted is the absence of citations from the Academy of Management journals or the Journal of Vocational Behavior; the academic literature cited is primarily from the fields of sociology and women's studies. These two new volumes in the "Contemporary World Issues" series share the strengths of other series volumes in being engaging, concise, and well organized. They also follow the series' structure by providing an introduction/overview, a chronology, biographical sketches, statistics and graphs, a directory of organizations, and selected print, nonprint, and web resources. Among other highlights, Gilbert (economics, Hobart and William Smith Coll.) tracks population growth from Neolithic times to the present and offers long-term growth projections, while Stebbins, a librarian at Brandeis University with a special interest in work-family issues, provides landmark legal decisions. Far from spoon-feeding undergraduates, these titles challenge the student researcher to consider the international and historical scope of the two topic areas. Of particular value are the abstracts for the selected monographs in the resources section, which not only motivate student interest in the book described and the topic itself but will prove useful for collection development. In general, the series could be improved by the addition of recommendations for online databases to search for each topic, perhaps including the authorized subject headings for the topic. Paula R.
