Provides basic background information, covers diagnostics, and reviews current treatments of 100 major medical disorders most often occurring in adults over 50. Using clear, concise language, the editors have compiled a definitive encyclopedia for ready reference or home use. The authors have drawn data from sources at Hopkins, supplemented with information from organizations such as the American Heart Association and the National Cancer Institute. Covering topics from cancer to dental and oral disorders, the book intends to provide available knowledge rather than report the most recent advances. A particularly valuable section consists of a directory listing names, phone numbers, and addresses of teaching hospitals, health information organizations, government health agencies, and self-help groups. While The Merck Manual of Geriatrics ed. by William B. and Robert Berkow (1990) discusses similar topics, its audience is doctors, and Howard A. Thornton's A Medical Handbook for Senior Citizens and Their Families (1989) lacks the scope and resources of this work. Recommended. J. M. Coggan; University of Florida

Basic information about medical conditions can help older patients gain a better understanding of their own health and participate actively in healthcare. By being medically well informed, they can differentiate symptoms that are part of the normal aging process from those that signal illness. This handbook is a compendium of symptoms, diagnostic procedures, treatments, causes, and preventative measures for a variety of disorders that affect people over the age of 50: cancer, hearing loss, depression, insomnia. The text--prepared by Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions in cooperation with health organizations such as the American Heart Association, the American Academy of Dermatology, and the National Cancer Institute--is authoritative, clearly written, and illustrated with drawings and diagrams. Emphasizing patient participation, the book includes tips on finding a physician and hospital, descriptions of medical specialties, and a state-by-state list of teaching hospitals. There is also a directory of health information organizations. More detailed than H. Winter Griffith's Complete Guide to Symptoms, Illness and Surgery for People Over 50 ( LJ 6/15/92), this manual is highly recommended.-- Karen McNally Bensing, Benjamin Rose Inst.
